Leaving Home Base

The drive from Kempner to Houston was pretty uneventful until we got into the city and had to deal with drivers that pull directly in front of us – we had to slam the brakes a few times.  At times like these, I wish I had a train horn installed in Jack.

On the way down, we stopped at a flying J and had Jack and Diane weighed.  It was a relief to know that we were not overweight – one of my concerns.

RV Resorts Marina Bay

Julie researched for an RV park that was within an hour’s drive of the Houston Airport and she found RV Resorts Marina Bay on the South East side of Houston close to Galveston.

This is a newly remodeled resort that also has numerous cabins for non-RVers to stay.  It has all the amenities and is located on a bayou.  Although we are packed in like sardines, the location makes up for it.

Kemah Boardwalk

The Kemah Boardwalk is just two miles away.  The boardwalk is the closest thing to Six Flags that Houston has to offer – It has a Rollercoaster, rides, boardwalk games and shops.  One end houses an aquarium and the other a Starbucks.  Bubba Gumps is also on site.  The rides light up the night and this place makes a great day-trip.

For great BBQ, steaks and more visit T-Bone Tom’s.   Word is they have a great outdoor venue with live music.  We have not experienced that yet, But…. I did get to try Armadillo and Shark eggs (see pix) made famous by DDD Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Tookies was recommended to us so we had to try their monster burgers.  Once you pick it up you cannot set it down.

Galveston Island (35 min) is a must do when the weather is nice.  We visited on a foggy day – it made the Pleasure Pier haunting – a great place for a zombie flick.

We also made our first short movie.  I wanted to re-create something that I had seen on Netflix.  The background music comes from ZapPow – a Jamaican band that was popular in the 70’s and has now regrouped.   Their album was produced by my brother Dave Peters who has an affinity for all things Bob Marley.  Glen DaCosta is the sax player for ZapPow and also played for Bob Marley and the Whalers.  Dave is also currently writing a book on Bob Marley.

The NASA Space Center is on our bucket list while here and is only 17 minutes away.  The kids have been there before, but now I will get my chance.

Jonthan’s Birthday

February marks the month that our son Jonathan JP becomes a year older.  JP is living in Austin Texas trying to find his way in life.  Although he is not represented much as we make our journey, he is in our thoughts always.

Just before turning 19, JP totaled his car.  Struggling with a parking gate, his car lost.  The repairs cost more than the value of his little Mercedes nicknamed The Egg because of its shape.

The Egg lasted about seven months before being totaled by Jonathan and our Little Jeep was totaled on Kaylin’s first night out.  I am hoping that this will be the last accident for a long while.

You know it is kind of funny.  When JP was 16, he was not motivated to get his driver’s license.  His answer was “There will soon be self driving cars, and in the meantime there is Uber.  I don’t need to get a driver’s license”.  I guess he is going to test that theory out real soon.

This blog marks the point where we are in real time, my stories have caught up with the adventure.  We have purchased all the necessary camera/video gear and are learning the editing software.  Our plan is to start producing video before we leave the state of Texas…
